Deckle initially started out as a productivity app for university students, helping young people stay motivated by letting them share daily tasks with friends and the community. Deckle’s growing impact on the community caught the attention of the University of Melbourne, who were after a proof-of-concept solution they could use within Deckle for their beginning-of-semester Orientation Challenge for first-year students.
In a 1-month timeframe, we designed a custom platform upgrade within Deckle that deeply understood new students, and encapsulated the spirit of the Orientation Challenge. Following the successful launch of the new platform, would be a deal worth over $13k from the app’s first customers, as well as funding from startup incubators like StartSpace and InnovatEd.
Challenge organisers (the Orientation Team) set up the challenge for participants. They can customise the look of the challenge page before officially publishing it
Organisers populate the challenge with tasks. Tasks can be posted immediately, or scheduled for release at a later time
Organisers update participants about the challenge by posting announcements, which participants can view
Once started, participants join the challenge with a pre-existing group, or form a group by selecting friends or other Deckle users
Participants in the same team can chat about the challenge and message each other directly
Participants can assign tasks to either themselves or someone else
When ready, participants submit their own tasks in the required text or media format
Organisers can view the public feed of submissions. To keep the community safe, organisers can remove posts that are inappropriate
Just under 200 students downloaded the app and began using Deckle Challenges
The Orientation Team signed a contract with Deckle for the next 6 university semesters
Deckle ranked No. 80 on the App Store in the ‘Social Networking’ category, 2 weeks following the Orientation Challenge launch
